March Book Selection!

The Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman by Marc Tyler Nobleman and illustrated by Ross McDonald
Here is a brief synopsis from the publisher:

JERRY SIEGEL AND Joe Shuster, two misfit teens in Depression-era Cleveland, were more like Clark Kent—meek, mild, and myopic—than his secret identity, Superman. Both boys escaped into the worlds of science fiction and pulp magazine adventure tales. Jerry wrote stories, and Joe illustrated them. In 1934, they created a superhero who was everything they were not. It was four more years before they convinced a publisher to take a chance on their Man of Steel in a new format—the comic book. The author includes a provocative afterword about Jerry and Joe’s long struggle with DC Comics when they realized they had made a mistake in selling all rights to Superman for a mere $130!

This is great picture book biography! Very readable. I found out some things I never knew about the comic I grew up with. Very interesting read! I can't wait to discuss this book at our next book club meeting on Tuesday, April 7th! In the meantime, take a look at the DC Universe website at http://dccomics.com/dcu/

Peggy Gifford Interview

When our book club met on Tuesday, March 3rd. we had our phone interview with Peggy Gifford, author of February's pick Moxy Maxwell does Not Love Writing Thank-You Notes. It was so exciting! Our group was packed into my little office to have our phone interview over the intercom.
The kids had some very thoughtful questions for the author. Did you know that Peggy wanted to be a very famous movie star when she was a kid? It seems that Peggy has a a lot of Moxy and that Moxy has a lot Peggy! We learned all about Peggy's writing process. The book club also had some great suggestions for Moxy's List of 211 Possible Career Paths. A penguin keeper? How about giving pirate tours? Just to name a few. Peggy was extremely gracious to do a telephone interview with our book club. Thank you, Peggy!! The kids were so enthusiastic and could not believe that the author actually took the time to talk to them! And oh, they loved the book too!

Author Interview! WOW!

Exciting News!! As promised, I emailed Peggy Gifford, the author of Moxy Maxwell Does Not Love Writing Thank-You Notes, and she has graciously agreed to do a telephone interview with our book club the next time we meet. I am so thrilled!! So have those thought provoking questions ready for Tuesday, March 3rd!

Book Buddies First Meeting!

Our first meeting of the Book Buddies was on Tuesday, February 3rd. I'm very excited that we have seven (7) very eager members!! Our first book choice is Moxy Maxwell Does Not Love Writing Thank-You Notes by Peggy Gifford. We will be discussing this book at our next meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd at 3:30 pm.
Take a look at author Peggy Gifford's website at http://www.peggygifford.com to see her other Moxy Maxwell book and you can even email Moxy herself!

It isn't as though Moxy isn’t grateful for her Christmas presents. She is. She’s just not thrilled that she has to write a thank-you note for each one by tomorrow . . . or she will not be allowed to fly to Hollywood to attend a starstudded
Hollywood bash with the father she hasn’t seen in three years. And writing thank-you notes is not something that a world-class Creative Type relishes doing. But it is more than writing thank-you notes that finally prevents Moxy from taking her trip. When her father cancels at the last minute, Moxy is forced to deal with the reality of a situation she doesn’t want to accept, and can’t change. But, not surprisingly, she rises to the occasion brilliantly.
